Which is the Best Resort in the Alps?

Zermatt wins the title of Best Ski Resort in the Alps according to the Best Ski Resort Report, conducted every two years. What’s your favourite resort and why?
UPDATED

The report claims to be the largest independent guest satisfaction survey in the Alps.

Zermatt won the title in 2014, 2016 and 2020.

During the 2022/23 winter season, around 50,000 skiers and snowboarders were surveyed in 54 leading ski resorts.

The survey focused on 14 key satisfaction criteria, ranging from the size of the ski resort to the quality of the slopes and the atmosphere in the resort.

Zermatt scored particularly highly in terms of:

  • The size of the ski resort
  • Transport convenience
  • Quality of runs
  • Guaranteed snow
  • Run safety
  • Restaurants in the resort and the ski area
  • The variety of hotels and accommodation.

In terms of overall satisfaction, Zermatt achieved the best score among the 54 top ski resorts.

But what makes it the best?

Feel free to add your thoughts on Zermatt, plus tell us about which is your favourite resort and, most importantly, why over on the PlanetSKI Facebook page.

There is of course no such thing as ‘the best resort’.

Each one is different with people having very different requirements.

We’d love to hear your view as there will be many different opinions.

Update: The debate has started!

Liviu Laszlo Barsan – The valley south of Mont Blanc: Trois Valee, Paradiski and Espace Killy are the best resorts. Don’t know how Zermatt comes to the first place…
Frances Black to Liviu Laszlo Barsan – well it’s all down to personal choice but where else do you get amazing glacier terrain, two different countries to ski in, no queues and beautiful scenery. The ones you mention are all much more crowded.
Carl Fummels – I agree it has it all but comes at a premium price of course.
Carrie Polhill – Normally as I live nearby I try to go at least once every season. I do love skiing in Zermatt.
Last season I was appalled to see they have introduced dynamic pricing for lift passes.
I’m sure it’s fine for a target market of foreign tourists which book for in advance, but as a near-local not even aware of the scheme and just wanting to pop up the hill because it just snowed, it makes the resort completely inaccessible financially nowadays.
Perhaps they should introduce a locals price like at tourist destinations in Nepal.

“We are delighted that Zermatt has once again been named as the best ski resort in the Alps. It is particularly gratifying because the award is based on the ratings of international guests,” said the Tourism Director of Zermatt, Daniel Luggen.

“This award makes it clear that our investment policy and premium pricing strategy offer guests an outstanding experience,” adds Markus Hasler, CEO of Zermatt Bergbahnen AG.
