PlanetSKI Stays in 14th Century French Chateau in Alps

We’ve stayed in some varied and interesting places in our travels around the Alps. But never a genuine French chateau. Check out the Le Chateau de Candie in Chambery.
It seemed the perfect place to relax and recover as we arrived with night falling.
The pool looked more than inviting.
The next day it proved to be so.
As did the Chateau de Candie itself.
It is run by the company that operates the UK ski companies Ski France and Purple Ski and is a sought after overnight stop before or after a stay in the Alps.
We are here in between matches during the Rugby World Cup in France that we are follwoing during the group stages:
And for a spot of mountain hiking above Chambery and visiting the city:
But what about the Chateau itself?
It is a fully restored 14th century chateau set in a 15-acree estate overlooking the town of Chambery.
The first testimonies of a fortified house belong to the noble Candie family.
They were close with the House of Savoie and the two families would hunt together in the Candie woods.
After being successively sold several times, the Château de Candie was acquired in 1664 by Jean André Sarde, a merchant from Piemont in northern Italy.
The family lived there for over a hundred years and it then became a hospital and an orphanage.
In 1884 Caroline de Saint Séverin, wife of the nobleman Tredicini, bought the château at auction.
The family then lived there for a just over 60 years, before new owners took over.
In 1990 Didier Lhostis, an antique enthusiast and creator of leather goods purchased the château and decided to restore it to a hotel .
Four years later it opened.
In 2016 the current hotel owners took it over.
We dined in La Cantine de Candie in the garden floor.
The meal was rather good value.
Set in a relaxing and informal dining area.
The food was simply delicious.
Breakfast the next day was a simple, but tasty affair.
It is not often one gets to stay in a Chateau and not often at such good value.
It has 25 rooms and suites – we stayed in Chambre 103, behind the central wooden door.
And check out some further images of the interior and exterior of the Chateau:
It even has its own vineyard with viognier grapes grown.
We will undoubtedly be passing by this part of the Alps next winter and we know where PlanetSKI is hoping to pamper itself again.
The Chateau claims to offer” the perfect stop-over en route to or from the Alps.”
It seemed hard to argue with that claim.
It provided the perfect getaway in an oasis of luxury and calm.
