A Day Ski Touring in the Tirol

It is one of the big growth areas in snowsports – ski touring. It doesn’t have to be for the experts. Check out our photogallery from the weekend.

Last weekend saw some fabulous snowfall in the Tirol.

Once the weather cleared many people went to the resorts around Innsbruck for fresh powder.

Others reached for their touring skis out and headed uphill.

One was PlanetSKI reader, Holger Gassler and he has sent over some fabulous images of his day heading from Gasthof Adelshof at 1,322m to Birgitzer Alm at 1,840m.

“The temperature ranged from -3 C to – 8 C,” said Holger.

“There was perfect powder from top to bottom, with many locals out.

“Everyone was just amazed by the beauty of the winter landscape.”

“It is an easy skitour, great for the beginning of the season and for beginners and families,” added Holger.

“It is a safe tour, as no avalanche risk and tree-lined.

“It was a former ski piste and now a beloved ski touring spot, even in the evening for ski tours.”

Information from Innsbruck Tourism:

In the Innsbruck region, there is not only a wide range of different ski touring routes, but also a huge variety of tours that lead from wintry valleys up to alpine mountaineering villages and on to plateaus.

Whether you want to complete a tour entirely under your own steam, with the help of ski lifts and public transport or as a combination of all the above – just like the selection of suitable tours, the possibilities for the ascent are almost unlimited.

See here for more on ski touring around Innsbruck.

Ski tours on groomed slopes are perfect for beginners.

They give you a taste of ski touring while allowing you to slowly get to grips with this new and wonderful sport – without any danger of avalanches and without calling for additional avalanche equipment or extensive mountaineering experience.

Important, please note: being able to ski is a requirement – after all, you want to be able to enjoy the ride down.

Whether during the day or on one of the official ski touring evenings, the piste ski tours at Patscherkofel, Muttereralm, Axamer Lizum and Rangger Köpfl are always a joy.

A message from PlanetSKI and Innsbruck Tourism:

The final responsibility lies with the tourer to inform him or herself about current conditions before setting out.

Ski touring is a sport in which the risks should never be underestimated.

We cannot accept any responsibility for snow conditions, avalanche risks and other outside influences.

Every ski tourer is responsible for their own adequate avalanche protection and should check all current conditions with Tirol’s Avalanche Warning Service.
