Summer Skiing Delayed in Italian Resort as Too Much Snow

Passo Stelvio was due to open this weekend, but the access road remains unsafe after heavy late season snow with much snow in the resort. This summer sees excellent starting conditions for summer glacier skiing.

Its opening date has been pushed back a week to June 7th.

We reported on the snow clearing operation in the area earlier on PlanetSKI:

So, what is happening in the Italian summer ski area?

Already the mountain section of the Giro d’Italia cycle race has been cancelled due to the threat of avalanche at altitude.

“The amount of snow this year has been exceptional,” said a statement from the resort.

“While this might be good news for winter sports enthusiasts, it presents a challenge for getting the slopes ready for summer skiing.”

“Our team is working tirelessly to ensure the slopes are safe and enjoyable for our guests.”

“We are constantly monitoring the situation and will provide updates on a confirmed opening date as soon as possible.”

It seems even the date of June 7th might be pushed back.

Only a handful of resorts in the Alps offer summer glacier skiing, but this year it looks like being one of the best starts in recent years.

There are also some turns on offer in Scandinavia.

The Norwegian resort of Stryn Sommer Ski fired up its lifts last weekend.

The resort was due to open on June 1st but brought proceedings forward.

It has depth of 6m after heavy winter snow.

Other resorts in Scandinavia are also open.
