More Snow in the Alps Boosts Summer Glacier Skiing

More snow has fallen at altitude with heavy rain lower down.

The Swiss resort of Zermatt has seen heavy flooding in town and the rail links to the resort have been closed.

Trains are no longer running between Visp and Zermatt said the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn in a statement.

Here is a video from the last train to leave the resort:

The Vispa river burst its banks on Friday morning.

The winter season ended well with large quantities of snow in April and May as we reported at the time.

Since then further snow has fallen.

Now there has been more snow with 20cm of fresh snow at altitude on an already deep base.

Alpine resorts currently open for summer skiing and snowboarding:

  • Hintertux, Austria
  • Les2Alpes, France
  • Val d’Isere,France
  • Passo Stelvio, Italy
  • Cervinia, Italy
  • Zermatt,  Switzerland

Molltaler closed last weekend with Tignes in France expected to open later this month.

There are also resorts open in Scandinavia.

So, what is summer glacier skiing like?
