Four Dead in Another Weekend of Severe Flooding in Parts of the Alps

It was the second weekend in a row that heavy rain hit parts of Switzerland and northern Italy. UPDATED
Three people died in the Ticino canton in Switzerland after a landslide.
In the Valais region the body of a man was found at a hotel in the resort of Saas-Grund.
Police said they believed he had been caught by surprise by floodwaters.
Some mountain roads passes, including the Gotthard Pass that links Switzerland and Italy, were shut.
Railway lines were also affected, with homes and businesses flooded.
The Swiss President, Viola Amherd, called on the nation’s residents to stay alert and follow official instructions.

Floods, thunderstorms and landslides hit parts of the Italian Alps.
Firefighters carried out about 80 rescue operations, evacuating dozens of people in the northern Piedmont region.
In Italy, disastrous flooding underway between Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta due to storms. Noasca has received 149mm of rain and Cogne 91mm (in this video). The most critical situations are in the Orco, Soana, and Lanzo valleys.

In the Aosta several villages were cut off due to overflowing rivers, heavy rain and landslides.

It follows heavy rain the previous weekend that saw the Swiss resort of Zermatt cut off as water cascaded through the village.

The flood risks continue for Lake Constance and the Rhone River, according to the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology.
It remains unclear how the slopes at the handful of ski resorts that offer summer glacier skiing were affected.
