PlanetSKI Turns into PlanetBEACH
19th July 2024
We have been in Greece partly for summer activities, but also to research skiing in Greece ahead of a potential visit next winter. NEW
We started off on the beaches on the island of Kefalonia.
In our next blog we looked at the skiing in offer in more than 20 areas in the winter months, with details about a Greek World Cup slalom skier, ‘AJ’ Ginnes who has stood on the podium at World Championship and World Cut events.
Now we are back on the beaches on the island of Ithaka.
Ithaka is 40-minute ferry ride from Sami on the east coast of Kefalonia.
It is our second ferry journey after the short hop from Lixouri to Argostoli.
No Greek trip is complete without a bit of ferry-hoping.
On Ithaka we headed to the town of Kioni with its fabulous beaches.
It was beginning to feel like one of PlanetSKI’s winter road trips where we head to the smaller lesser-known resorts and stay as long or as little as we feel like.
Many are done on the spur of the moment as conditions dictate.
Same in Greece as on the way to Kioni we passed Frikes and pulled in for a quick swim.
There was a stairway to heaven.
Though it was going ‘down’.
Rather than ‘up’ like in some ski resorts we have visited.
Later on Ithika we chose Frikes as our lunch spot even though we had planned to stop elsewhere.
As in the winter months we had a plan, but were quite prepared to change it.
Always have a plan for a day on the ski slopes, and always change it at will is how we like it.
On Ithika we visited some other fabulous beaches:
The observant amoung you will have noticed that the beaches are mainly pebble ones in this part of Greece.
I was disappointed at first, but as when the snow is not perfect it so good just to enjoy and deal with what you have.
Plus it was good not to end up with sand everywhere after a day on the beach.
As dawn broke on our final day in Sami I knew that if next winter on the ski slopes of Greece is half as good as summer on its beaches, then we are in for a treat.
Our Greek time summer may have been good, but we are now looking forward to winter in this part of the world.
