Warm Temperatures Impact on Summer Skiing
2nd August 2024
There are only four glacier ski areas open in the Alps and their available ski terrain is shrinking.
The freezing level remains at around 4,000m.
The open areas are:
- Hintertux
- Saas-Fee
- Zermatt (accessible from Cervinia)
- Passo Stelvio
There are no open areas in France with Val Thorens set to start its season in late November.
It’s feared that some areas that are open may have to close in the next weeks unless the temperature drops and conditions improve.
The base at Hintertux in Austria is down from over 2m, and its available terrain is now 16kms – down from 20kms.
Passo Stelvio has 4kms open.
Some precipitation is forecast, but it’s more likely to be rain rather than snow high elevations under the current conditions.
