Bobsleigh Track for 2026 Olympics Progresses
29th October 2024
The track in Cortina will also be used for luge and skeleton and the pre-approval process will be completed by the end of March 2025.
At one stage it had been thought there would be no track and the event might have to take place elsewhere.
Innsbruck in Austria had been touted as a venue, but the Italian government insisted all events would take place in Italy.
The IOC and 2026 Organising Committee have recently visited the site and expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far
It is reported than half of the new facility is complete, and the authorities have announced that there will be an international training week with a test competition prior to the Olympic season.

Ski Club GB Awards Pery Medal to Snowcamp Founder
21st October 2024
Dan Charlish, founder of the charity Snow Camp, has been awarded the Ski Club of Great Britain’s highest accolade, the Pery Medal.
It was first handed to Sir Arnold Lunn in 1930 in recognition of his achievements in the world of alpine skiing and ski racing.
Since then, the Pery Medal, awarded by the Council of the Ski Club of Great Britain to a skier, individual or organisation for an outstanding contribution to snowsports, has seen a number of high profile recipients including Stein Eriksen, Konrad Bartelski, Martin Bell, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Jenny Jones and in 2023, David Ryding.
The Pery Medal, was instituted in 1929 by the Hon. E. C. Pery, later the Earl of Limerick, DSO and President of the Ski Club of Great Britain between 1925 and 1927.
It’s awarded based on set criteria including making an outstanding contribution to the development of snowsports.
A unanimous council decision to award Dan Charlish was made for the contribution his charity Snow Camp has made to the snowsports community over the last 20 years, helping over 20,000 inner-city young people to ski or snowboard either in the UK or overseas.
See here for more about Snow Camp
“It’s such an honour to win this incredible award from the Ski Club of Great Britain, especially as it came as a complete surprise when it was announced by Jenny Jones at the London Snow Show last weekend,” said Dan Charlish.
“I’m immensely proud of all the achievements we’ve made at Snow Camp since 2003, having positively impacted over 20,000 young people nationally from underserved communities, enabling them to experience snowsports for the first time and progress through our programmes.
“Our fantastic team continues to deliver Snow Camp with a passion and commitment to young people nationally, providing pathways to work in the snowsports industry and beyond.
“Over recent years it has also been so important to see mental health support become a key component of our work alongside life skills training, qualifications, volunteering opportunities and overseas residential trips.
“We are hugely grateful for the support of everyone who gets behind Snow Camp’s work, ensuring we can continue to turn young lives around with the power of snowsports.
“And thank you once again to the Ski Club of Great Britain for recognising our charity with this wonderful award.”
Angus Maciver, Chairman of the Ski Club of Great Britain, said: “The Ski Club was delighted to award the Pery Medal to Dan, whose contribution to snowsports is undeniable over the past twenty years since his charity Snow Camp was founded.
“We have all seen the benefits of Dan’s achievement as more and more young people that wouldn’t have had the chance to participate in winter sports, whether in the UK or oversees, have joined up and enjoyed all the benefits that the sport can offer.
“Dan’s passion, commitment and sheer determination is very clear for anyone working in snowsports to see and it’s fitting that he can be recognised by the wider skiing public alongside some of the other greats of the sport that have won this award over the past 90 plus years.
“The Ski Club is also looking forward to working more closely with Snow Camp in the near future”.

About Maison Sport
Maison Sport was created by a team of industry professionals with over 25 years of ski teaching experience.
All ex-British ski team members & fully qualified ski instructors, the founding team at Maison Sport have successfully worked together over the past 8 years.
The vision for Maison Sport was conceived after the trio acquired a traditional ski school in France, where revenue has since increased around 10 times.
Witnessing an antiquated way of booking lessons, they spotted an opportunity to solve a problem for customers and ski instructors, by using a technology platform to connect the two parties together directly.
Maison Sport offers reduced costs to the customer of as much as 50% and provides a more ethical and profitable practice for the instructors, who keep up 93% of the cost of the lessons.
Much like many successful marketplaces, one of Maison Sport’s key selling points is its unique instructor reviews, only left by past customers, which enable new customers to make informed decisions about their ski or snowboard lessons.
Currently, the Maison Sport marketplace includes more than 400 resorts and over 1,300 trusted, qualified instructors across France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria.
In France, Maison Sport’s instructor pool is second only to the Ecole de Ski Francais, a company that was founded in 1937.
Swedish Reference Glaciers Continue to Shrink
19th October 2024
The results of the annual measurements of the glaciers’ mass balance show that Storglaciären, Rabots Glacier, Rivgojiehhki, and Moarhmmáglaciären have shrunk significantly.
These are the largest losses since systematic measurements began.
The measurements check both the winter balance, which is determined at the end of winter and accounts for the glaciers’ growth in the form of snow and ice, and the summer balance, which captures the glaciers’ melting during the summer.
The information is reported to the World Glacier Monitoring Service in Switzerland, where data for approximately 50 reference glaciers worldwide is collected.
Compared to the average melting over the past decade:
- The mass loss on Storglaciären this year has increased fivefold and is also more than three times greater than the previous year.
- The Rabots Glacier, which this year lost just over 9,450 tons of ice, surpassing the glacier’s previously largest recorded mass loss of just over 7,100 tons in 2011.
- Rivgojiehhki and Moarhmmáglaciären lost just over 9,000 tons and 8,200 tons, respectively, during the balance year 2023/2024, representing an increase in loss of more than 50 percent for both glaciers compared to their previous largest losses.
German Ski Federation Wins Media Rights Battle against FIS
17th October 2024
The Munich Regional Court has ruled that the FIS plan, as it stood, constituted a “deliberate restriction of competition” under European antitrust law, in violation of free market rules.
The court issued an interim injunction in favour of the DSV, preventing the FIS from proceeding with the centralised marketing of media rights on the terms proposed by the FIS for the 2026/2027 season.
FIS described the ruling as “completely wrong” and said it would appeal.
The ruling only applies to the German Federation, but other National Bodies have been following the case closely with some also opposing the move by FIS.

Foreign Office Updates UK Drivers Heading to the Alps & Pyrenees
7th October 2024
British travellers heading to France this winter have been issued an update by the UK Foreign Office.
Those who are planning on driving in the mountain regions are warned that they could face a fine if they don’t comply with seasonal motoring rules, the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office has said.
It has recently issued an update on the requirements drivers face in the mountains.
“Vehicles driven in certain mountain regions during the winter period, 1st November to 31st March, must be fitted with winter tyres or chains,” said the FCDO.
People not complying could be fined.
The French authorities say the rules are in place “in order to improve road traffic in the mountainous regions and the safety of users”.
Drivers should also look out for signs at entrances and exits from mountainous areas where the winter equipment rules apply.
Similar rules apply across the alpine countries with Austria requiring winter tyres.
Switzerland and Italy also have their own rules and regulations for driving in the mountains in winter.
France Gives Financial Assurances for 2030 Winter Olympics
6th October 2024
Prime Minister Michel Barnier provided has provided guarantee that the French government would cover any potential budgetary deficit that might arise.
It was awarded the 2030 Games back in July as we reported at the time:
France has had a period of political instability and the assurances have now been given by the new right-wing Prime Minister.
“As Prime Minister… I commit to guarantee to cover any potential budgetary deficit of the organising committee,” Barnier stated in a direct letter to the IOC President, Thomas Bach.
After signing the guarantees by the set date of 1st October, he now needs to have them ratified by parliament no later than 1st March, according to IOC guidelines.
That is by no means certain due to the ongoing political instability, but observers expect it to go through after the all-round success of the Paris Summer Olympic Games.
German Ski Federation Takes FIS to Court
5th October 2024
The row is over the centralisation of marketing rights.
The German Ski Federation, DSV, filed an injunction against the International Ski & Snowboard Federation, FIS, in Munich.
The main reason for this is the FIS’s decision to centralise the marketing rights for ski competitions, a move that the DSV believes violates German and European competition and anti-trust laws.
The case is being heard in the Munich Regional Court with a decision is expected by mid-October.
The Austrian Ski Federation also believes that FIS president Johan Eliasch’s decision violates European competition law.
Switzerland has also been critical of the FIS’s proposed centralisation but has stopped short of going to court.
Swiss Government Pledges Support for 2038 Olympics
4th October 2024
The Swiss Federal Council says it will support a nationwide bid of sustainable, decentralised and privately financed Games.
The decision means that the evaluations required for a definitive Olympic bid can now be initiated.
Last year Switzerland was rejected as an option for the 2030 or 2034 Winter Games, with the International Olympic Committee selecting France and the USA.
It did though say Switzerland could enter a “privileged dialogue” with a view to bidding for the 2038 Games.
The Swiss Federal Council has now given its political support to Swiss sport for a possible Olympic bid.
The Federal Council is establishing an interdepartmental working group within the framework of the “privileged dialogue” that the IOC promised Switzerland.
“The Federal Council’s decision is proof to the IOC that Switzerland is ready and willing to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, provided that the in-depth evaluations show that a bid is possible under the predefined general conditions,” said the Co-President of the Association for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Switzerland 2038, Ruth Wipfli Steinegger.

Zermatt Lift Company Sees Best Financial Year in its History
1st October 2024
The Swiss ski resort has one of the highest lift ticket prices in the world and during the season of 2022/23 had an operating income of CHF 90m (£79.5m).
Summer business was highlighted as one of the main reasons along with the winter lift pass.
“Thanks to the highly successful excursion business in summer 2023 and substantial transport revenue during the 2023/24 winter season, overall results for the fiscal year surpassed the outstanding performance of the previous period,” said Zermatt Bergbahnen.
High demand from visitors from Asia and North America saw the company achieve new record results in its excursion business.
The mild and sunny summer of 2023 brought out sustained high visitor numbers from neighbouring regions and more distant markets, resulting in a 22% rise in revenue from summer traffic year on year.
The resorts uses the dynamic pricing model with the growth in online sales continuing.
This now accounts for 41.7% of sales in the winter season.
“The best-price guarantee for early bookings and the publication in the online store of anticipated price changes underpinned the positive development,” said the lift company.
