Another Autumn Snowstorm Hits the Alps

As more resorts open, more snow is falling. It’s turning into one of the best autumns for skiing in recent memory though the temperature is set to warm up. NEW

Heavy snow is now falling this weekend at altitude in the Alps.

The open glacier areas are in excellent conditions for the time of year, with more opening this weekend.

Kauntertal in Austria opened on Thursday.

Kitzsteinhorn in Austria opens on Saturday.

These are the glacier areas currently open in the Alps.

  • Hintertux, Austria
  • Pitztal, Austria
  • Stubai, Austria
  • Soelden, Austria
  • Kaunertal, Austria
  • Val Senales, Italy,
  • Passo Stelvio, Italy
  • Saas-Fee, Switzerland
  • Zermatt, Switzerland

In Val Senales skiing is only for race team training and not the general public.

Resorts are also opening in Scandinavia as we have reported in this earlier PlanetSKI post:

“Today will see further snow to quite low levels across the eastern Alps, before the weather turns milder over the next few days, when most of the lower-lying fresh snow will disappear again,” said the alpine weather expert, Fraser Wilkin, from weathertoski.co.uk on Friday 4th October.

“All in all, though, there is a lot of snow across the Alpine glaciers for the time of year so if you are lucky enough to catch some decent weather, there should be plenty of good skiing on offer in those resorts that are open,” added Fraser.

It is though set to warm up with some rain likely to 3,200m or so later in the weekend and into next week.

We have been reporting on ski areas opening in the past few weeks following the huge snow falls of September:
