Heavy Snow Falls in North America with Winter Edging Closer in the Alps

The first resort has opened in the USA with World Cup ski racing starting in Europe. Check out the latest PlanetSKI snow report. NEW

Wolf Creek in Colorado was the first resort out of the blocks after some good natural snowfall and snowmaking.

It followed some unseasonably warm autumn temperatures in the US ski states.

There have also been snowmaking systems fired up, not just at the expected high-altitude ski areas in Colorado, but also in California, Utah, and even Arizona and New Mexico.

In Europe winter is edging closer.

“After the recent snowfalls up high, the weather has been milder and more settled, with little precipitation to report over the past seven days,” said Snow Forecaster.

“Most resorts are reporting excellent conditions, with fairly fresh snow cover and temperatures remaining close to freezing on glaciers.”

In a sure sign that winter is approaching with the first World Cup alpine ski races of the season take place this weekend in Soelden in Austria.

We have reported on the races and previewed the season ahead:

There are signs it may snow this weekend in Soelden, but hopefully not too much, with the current forecast predicting light snowfall.

Here are the resorts with some ski terrain currently on offer in the Alps:

  • Hintertux, Austria
  • Pitztal, Austria
  • Stubai, Austria
  • Soelden, Austria
  • Kaunertal, Austria
  • Moltaller, Austria
  • Val Senales, Italy

In Val Senales skiing is only for race team training and not the general public.

There are no resorts open in France with Tignes and Val Thorens planning to open on November 23rd.

Skiing is also underway in Scandinavia with snowsports on offer in Levi & Ruka in Finland, plus Kabdalis in Sweden and the Galdhopiggen summer ski area in Norway.
