Young Italian Ski Racer Dies in Training

The 19-year-old Italian racer Matilde Lorenzi has died in a fall in training. She was a promising member of the reserve squad. NEW

Matilde Lorenzi fell on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales in northern Italy.

It is reported she suffered head injuries after she hit the icy slopes  at speed and was transferred by helicopter to Bolzano hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

She was a specialist in speed events and was the Italian senior super-G champion last season.

She finished sixth in the downhill and eighth in the super-G at the 2024 Junior World Championships in Chatel, France.

Her best result in the European Cup, the last step before the World Cup, was an 11th place in super-G in December 2023 in St Moritz, Switzerland.

She was a corporal in the Italian army

“On behalf of the entire Army family and myself, I express my deepest condolences to the family of Corporal VFP4 Matilde Lorenzi, who lost her life in yesterday’s tragic accident during giant slalom training in Val Senales,”  said the chief of staff of the Italian Army, Carmine Masiello.

“Matilde Lorenzi has left us,” said a state  from the Italian Ski Federation, FISI

“This was announced by the Italian Ministry of Defence, which expresses its deepest condolences for the 19-year-old Italian Army athlete.

“Joining the family’s grief is also President Flavio Roda, who has no words to express the tragedy being experienced by the entire Italian Winter Sports Federation, its technicians, athletes, teammates, the Federal Council and the entire staff.

“Matilde was the victim of a fall during a training session that the team was carrying out on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales.

“The FISI is in mourning, training activities are suspended, and it hugs the family and friends and all those who loved Matilde and will remember her forever”.

An investigation is underway.
