The temperatures have dropped, and some snow has fallen. It looks like it’s just a taste of what’s to come with heavy snow set to fall across the Alps next week. UPDATED
The recent snow has been very welcome after a prolonged dry spell.
The snow has topped up the resorts that are already open, while Verbier in Switzerland opened a small section of its ski area at the weekend following the snow.

Here is more on the Lac des Vaux area that opened:
On Monday 10-15cm of snow should have fallen above 1,800m in the north-western Alps.
In places the freezing level should drop to as low as 1,000m by Monday.
“The next, bigger, storm is expected to arrive on Tuesday afternoon and continue into Wednesday,” said the alpine weather expert Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk.
“The heaviest of this snow is likely to fall in the central-eastern Swiss and western Austrian Alps, where 10-15cm can be expected above 1600m or so in the likes of Engelberg and Lech.
“The French Alps, by contrast, are likely to see little if any snow from this first front.
“After a mostly dry day on Monday, a more potent storm will arrive late on Tuesday and continue to influence the weather in the Alps on Wednesday.
“Although details may change, at this stage the heaviest snow looks likely to fall in the northern French and western Swiss Alps on Tuesday night and then the eastern Swiss and Austrian Alps on Wednesday.”
The freezing level will generally be low with significant amounts of snow at mid and high altitudes, especially in the northern half of the Alps.
Another large storm is forecast to hit the Alps on Friday.
It is what many skiers and snowboarders want to hear as we approach the second half of November.
