Vail Resorts Confirms it is Actively Looking for New Resorts to Buy in the Alps

The US company already runs the ski areas in Andermatt and Crans-Montana in Switzerland. It has confirmed to PlanetSKI that it is looking for other resorts across the Alps. NEW

The deal for the lift company at Crans-Montana went through in August.

We reported on it at the time:

In America Vail Resorts usually owns the whole resort both on & off the mountain, and all the resort facilities.

In Crans-Montana it is not running any hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs, retail outlets or other major businesses in town, but it owns the lifts and controls the ski area.

Vail Resorts has acquired an 84% stake in Remontées Mécaniques Crans Montana Aminona (CMA) SA.

CMA was previously owned by a business from the Czech Republic.

Vail Resorts has also acquired 100% of SportLife AG, up from the 80% that was previously announced, which operates one of the ski schools at the resort.

It employees around 50 instructors.

As a comparison the main Swiss ski & snowboard school employs 400 instructors.

Vail Resorts also acquired full ownership of 11 restaurants located on and around the mountain.

PlanetSKI editor James Cove has been speaking to the new General Manger of the resort, Pete Petrovski from Vail Resorts.

He has been working for Vail Resorts for 14 years and his last post was Senior Director of Ski Services at Keystone in Colorado.

So, why has Vail Resorts bought the lift system at Crans-Montana and obtained the control of the ski area?

So, it seems there is no doubt that the US giant will be buying into more resorts in Europe.

PlanetSKI will be keeping its ears open and we’ll let you know what we hear.
