Two others survived.

The victim was not wearing an avalanche transceiver and was buried in over 1m of snow.

Rescuers located her with a probe search after using a Recco to find her body.

It follows the death of a 14-year old boy in Les Arcs who was caught in an avalanche while skiing with his family.

A major rescue operation followed involving two rescue helicopters, dog handlers, 33 mountain rescuers and two Alpine police officers.

Around an hour after the avalanche, the 22-year-old son was located beneath 2m of snow, but could not be resuscitated.

Rescue teams supported by a helicopter managed to reach the location on Friday where the two men went missing in the central Abruzzo region.

The two Italian men, aged 41 and 48, were hit by an avalanche last weekend while climbing at an altitude of 2,500m.

The men were able to make an emergency call, but assistance arrived too late.

The search was hampered by freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall and wind gusts of more than 100km/h.
