5 Killed in 2 Separate Avalanches in the Alps

One avalanche in Val-Cenis, France, killed four Norwegian skiers. A Swiss skier died near Chamonix. NEW

Three of the Norwegians were killed instantly while a fourth, a woman, died in hospital after suffering severe hypothermia and a cardiorespiratory arrest.

They were part of a larger group of seven skiers.

The remaining three were unharmed.

“It was an avalanche of great size which was triggered outside the ski area,” said the authorities.

A team of 10 mountain rescuers was involved in the search and rescue operation.

The Swiss fatality was a 30-year-old woman who was skiing with her brother, who was taken to hospital for tests, and her father, who was unharmed.

All three had avalanche airbags and were skiing off-piste in the Mont Blanc massif mountain range.

We will post more details as we receive them.

After the recent snow there has been a Level 4 risk (high) in some areas of the Alps.

The authorities are urging all people venturing off piste to be correctly equiped and to exercise caution.
