The Swiss Federal Council says it will support a nationwide bid of sustainable, decentralised and privately financed Games.
The decision means that the evaluations required for a definitive Olympic bid can now be initiated.
Last year Switzerland was rejected as an option for the 2030 or 2034 Winter Games, with the International Olympic Committee selecting France and the USA.
It did though say Switzerland could enter a “privileged dialogue” with a view to bidding for the 2038 Games.
The Swiss Federal Council has now given its political support to Swiss sport for a possible Olympic bid.
The Federal Council is establishing an interdepartmental working group within the framework of the “privileged dialogue” that the IOC promised Switzerland.
“The Federal Council’s decision is proof to the IOC that Switzerland is ready and willing to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, provided that the in-depth evaluations show that a bid is possible under the predefined general conditions,” said the Co-President of the Association for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Switzerland 2038, Ruth Wipfli Steinegger.
