WE'RE IN TOWN FOR THE FWT - James Cove, Fieberbrunn, the Tirol, Austria
Friday February 22, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

In Fieberbrunn in Austria to be precise. It's been a while since we watched the Freeride World Tour.

Here is what the riders will be coming down in Fieberbrunn.

The Wildseeloder.

It is only 2,117m high but it is quite a face for a freeride competition.

The live FWT webcast, that you can watch on You Tube below, is scheduled to kick off on Saturday 23rd February from 7.45am.

Watch all the live action here:

Now back in the day (2009) I did more than hang out.

In Tignes I skied the lower section of the competition mountain with some of the FWT crew when the resort held the event.

I was also on a specially invited media judging panel accompanied by a certain Glenn Plake.

A couple of months later I was at the grand finale on the mighty Bec des Rosses in Verbier.

The Swedish freerider, Renee Barkered, came second in the men's ski in Verbier a decade ago when I was slopeside.

Here he is back in 2009 with the female snowboard legend, Geraldine Fasnacht.

And just in case you are wondering I didn't see anyone playing table tennis.

So, first of all, what are conditions like?

The area has seen some of the biggest snow falls in the whole of Austria.

This was what Fieberbrunn looked like as I drove into town.

It snowed for 14 days in a row back in January leaving more than 2m.

And though on Friday the snow is worn at resort level with rain falling, up top where the event is taking place over the weekend, it is snowing heavily.

Fresh powder for the riders to do their stuff.

And the forecast?

More snow on Friday and then blue sky all the way.

In the Opening Ceremony the riders were introduced - pretty much all new faces to me.
