GB BOB TEAM GET SOCHI BRONZE
Thursday March 28, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Britain's four-man bobsleigh team have officialy been awarded the bronze medal from the 2014 Winter Olympics following doping disqualifications.

It's been a while since the two Russian teams were disqualified but it's only now that the International Olympic Committee have formally upgraded Team GB to 3rd place.

The quartet of John Jackson, Stuart Benson, Bruce Tasker and Joel Fearon originally finished 5th in Sochi, just 0.11 off third.

Athletes in both Russian sleds which finished above the Brits were caught doping, so now the GB crew are officially Olympic medallists, more than 5 years late.

The bronze brings Team GB's medal total from Sochi 2014 to 5 after Lizzy Yarnold's skeleton gold, Jenny Jones' snowboard slopestyle bronze, and silver and bronze medals for the men's and women's curling rinks respectively.

It makes Sochi 2014 Team GB's joint most successful Winter Olympics, drawing level with the 5 medals won last year at Pyeongchang 2018.

"Recognition from the IOC of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic four-man bobsleigh result is a big step forward to us receiving our Olympic bronze medal," John Jackson said.

"Disappointingly, it is a medal we should have received on an Olympic podium in 2014.

"Cheats have cost us that moment, along with other nations too.

"Finally as a team we have the result we have waited so long for and the whole of Team GB has a total haul of five from the Games."

Russian athletes from the Games were originally investigated following publication of the McLaren Report in 2016 with athletes from both sleds disqualified in November 2017.

The decision was then upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The British Olympic Association says it will work with the athletes to decide when and where to award the bronze medals to the athletes.

"Everyone involved in British Olympic Sport, and most particularly the athletes, will be delighted by the overdue award of the four man bob bronze medal from Sochi," Sir Hugh Robertson, Chairman of the BOA said.

"However, it is yet another example of British athletes denied their moment of podium glory by state sponsored cheating."

The re-allocation of medals means that Latvia are now the official gold medallists from the Games with the USA given silver.

The family of one of the American bobsledders will receive his medals from this event and another following his death.

Steven Holcomb, who died in May 2017, will be posthumously awarded two silver medals from the four-man bob and the two-man bob.
