PLENTY OF SKIING LEFT... - PlanetSKI Team
Sunday April 14, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Easter is, apparently, the last main week of the season. The PlanetSKI family is out in the Alps enjoying every last turn. UPDATED

It has been an excellent April so far and there's no prospect of things letting up.

It is quite simply the best April skiing we can remember.

Period.

It's been a family affair for us at PlanetSKI.

EASTER UPDATE:

Well, that was a rather good Good Friday!

Our editor, James Cove, has been in Obergurgl in the Tirol in Austria.

And here is what it looked like for James on a cruisy blue run...

Now James has been to Obergurgl many, many times and loves the place...

"It is certainly my favourite large non-glacier resort in this part of the Alps and possibly the whole of the Alps," said James.

"I know it well but this was a lunch surprise and new for me ... the Schonwieshutte."

The only way to get to it is by skidoo:

And this is what awaits:

"Now as a rule I do not take pictures of food and post them on PlanetSKI or social media as I find it rather tedious. In fact very tedious," said James.

"But all rules are made to be broken, and I still love breaking rules."

And the views on the way while hanging on to the skidoo tow ride:

Now some of you may be wondering who the PlanetSKI figure in the main photo is above ... and who is taking the pictures and shooting the videos.

Like James he prefers skiing in black.

But with a slightly more modern cut of jacket... We Are Horizontal

Step forward 25-year-old, Alex Cove.

He is our new digital marketing supremo at PlanetSKI... and knows more than a bit about skiing too.

He is a Level 3 ski instructor with three seasons in Banff, Canada, under his belt + a season in Perisher, Australia and has taught in Verbier, Switzerland.

He is now a fully paid up member of the PlanetSKI team.

His brief: take PlanetSKI to more and more skiers and snowboarders through your digital marketing expertise.

And the poor guy did the have to listen to his old man waffling on in a deck chair apres ski in Obergurgl.

Now, as well as the fabulous Easter skiing in Obergurgl, Hochgurgl and neighbouring Soelden there is more to come before the season ends.

Preparations are underway for some action next week.

What could it be?

Well, we're hoping to be back next week to watch the Audi Nines...

EASTER AWAITS:

Earlier in the week James was is in Hintertux in Austria, where he reports it's minus 6 degrees at the top, and plus 8 down in the valley.

So, what about the Weisse Rausch in St Anton that James mentions?

Just check out the videos:

And now what about some more images from Hintertux?

Stunning high-altitude skiing and we simply can't recommend it highly enough - especially at this time of year.

"The snow is fabulous here at the highest resort in Les3Vallees, Val Thorens. It is some of the best April snow I have skied," said Max.

"I have been skiing on some GS racing skis that are great in the morning when the snow is hard packed, but less so in the afternoon when things get a bit slushy."

"I am renting my skis from Intersport and they allow me to chop and change so tomorrow I am going to get some wider skis for the slush."

"And I'll probably need to have a lie in to let the ice melt."

"Time for some Folie après ski I guess." ;-)

WEDNESDAY 17TH APRIL

And let's not forget the Pyrenees.

This week winter has returned to Andorra, bringing with it a week of powder days as well as bluebird days - the best of both worlds for skiers and snowboarders.

"Across Andorra we have received around 30cm of snow, bringing new tracks to make in the fresh snow both on piste and off piste," said Rebecca Crawford form Andorra Resorts.

"Temperatures have dropped to around -9 in sectors, helping to maintain these perfect conditions for the whole week."

"100% of Pal-Arinsal slopes has been open with Grandvalira having 190km available out of the possible 210km - winter has come back with a bang and transformed Andorra back into a winter wonderland."

"No better way to end the season!"

TUESDAY 16TH APRIL

"Serre Chevalier in the French Alps has been wonderful," our reporter, Katie Bamber, reports back from the slopes.

"There's a week left of the season and this has to be some of the best spring conditions.

"The week started with temps well below zero, around -7 by midday up high, so the snow quality was great with hard piste skiing continuing well beyond lunch.

"It warmed up yesterday and the clouds have returned today - 16th April - with a few centimetres falling later in the day."

MONDAY 15TH APRIL

Our editor, James Cove, was skiing in Ischgl in Austria on Monday.

It was a blue sky day and cool for the time of year.

It looked good going up with some fresh overnight snow on the trees:

A taste of things to come?

He's sent this report on the snow conditions and the weather forecast in the Tirol for the week ahead:

And James mentioned a few gentle powder turns.

And ‘Where are the Easter crowds in Ischgl?' we hear you ask.

Well, they were out.

Ischgl was busy.

But, like many resorts, people in Ischgl tend to ski the same main slopes.

It is not hard to escape the hordes and find the empty areas.

We chose the fabulous run to Samnaun in Switzerland.

No-one at its start.

The key is to avoid the main area of Idalp - we passed through it just once and moved straight on.

In fact the only crowds we joined were at the end of the day.

SUNDAY 14TH APRIL

Our senior news reporter, Katie Bamber, is in Serre Chevalier in the southern French Alps.

One her favs.

Here is her report from Sunday.

And our editor, James Cove, witnessed the return of winter in the resorts around Innsbruck in the Tirol in Austria at the weekend.

This was the scene on the lift going up the gondola at one of his favourite resorts in the area, Schlick 2000.

And on the slopes barely a soul around.

At the end of last week James struck lucky in Soelden.

Rising above the clouds for this.

Spring skiing at its best.

James was in Soelden for the legendary ‘Hannibal' event.

See his report on the strangest spectacle you will ever see in the mountains.

Period.

Meanwhile over in Verbier our friends at the Warren Smith Ski Academy are putting on an extra late season course due to the levels of snow that remain.

"Due to these amazing spring conditions, we are also putting on one more 5 day Academy week here in @Verbier4 on the W/C April 21st - 26th," said The Academy.

"This will be limited to low numbers and is certain to sell out, so if you are either in resort already and keen to join, or you can make it out for a last minute blast, please get in touch with the team asap!"

See here for more.

Over in a different mountain range, it's looking lovely in the Pyrenees.

A fresh snowfall makes for lucky skiers first out in the morning.

One happy Soldeu customer comments:

@Peter Harbottle "Just back from there today. Fresh snow made conditions fantastic."

We've borrowed this image from our friends at Crystal Ski Holidays, in Soldeu, Andorra, who run many trips this way.

So, what of the rest of the week?

There is a little bit of snow in the forecast but nothing significant.

Here at PlanetSKI we will keep you posted from our teams out and about.

Many resorts close at the end of the month and we will be skiing till the last lifts close.

And just in case you are wondering skiing goes on deep into May in the glaciers resorts of the Tirol:

Stubai, Pitztal, Kaunteral, Soelden and Hintertux.

No prizes for guessing where PlanetSKI will be next month...
