HEAD HIGH IN SUMMER HEATWAVE - James Cove, PlanetSKI Editor
Tuesday July 2, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

High up in the Alps seems to be the best place to enjoy the hot weather. According to our readers & the ski resorts. UPDATED

If you want to keep cool in the record-breaking heatwave then heading up in the mountains seems a pretty good idea.

Our latest image comes from regular reader, Holger Gassler, as he goes mountain biking above Innsbruck.

"Clearing my mind - done," he said.

There is swimming to be had in the glacier itself in Hintertux in the Tirol in Austria.

Yup, it is possible to swim within its glacial waters - people have been doing so for years.

Or there is just swimming in alpine lakes.

"As the heatwave reaches its peak in Europe, there is nothing else for it but go for a wee dip in a mountain lake," said Lindsey Cairns from E-bike Europe as she was out on one of her rides in the Tirol in Austria.

The Tirol is one of our favourite places to head to in the summer months:

And then you can keep cool on this in Tignes, France:

There's a new attraction this summer.

Skiers can head up to the top in the open air on the roof of the new Grande Motte gondola for a 360-degree view taking in Mont Blanc, the Cime de Bellecôte and the Aiguille de la Grande Sassière.

Tignes is open for summer skiing at the moment.

However, the heatwave has taken its toll on the glaciers for summer skiing.

The environmental group, Protect Our Winters, makes its point:

They are still in shape after the heavy snow of last winter and the cool temperatures in May and earl June,  but not as good as they were when they opened a few weeks ago.

But there is still some fabulous skiing to be had on the alpine glaciers according to our friends over at the Warren Smith Ski Academy.

"Summer skiing 2019 is on! It's hot in the valley but cold and crisp at 3800 metres.  It's great to be back in Cervinia in the Aosta Valley and we are super excited about the next nine weeks," said Warren.

PlanetSKI partner the Warren Smith Ski Academy begins its five-day courses on 30th June.

They run for nine weeks on the Plateau Rosa glacier which is high above Zermatt and the Italian resort of Cervinia.
