In our occasional feature on new gear this season we take a look at the Jolner jacket from the Swedish brand Klättermusen. They’ve been around since 1975 so know what they’re doing when it comes to making durable, stylish outdoor gear.
Constructed from 3-layer partly recycled, waterproof and breathable Bluesign-approved ‘Cutan’ fabric, this is a shell jacket aimed at ski tourers and ski mountaineers, but I’d have no hesitation at all in using it for ‘regular’ skiing.
The fabric is soft to the touch but has a reassuringly durable feel and will withstand knocks and scrapes well, with reinforced areas over the shoulders and cuffs.
It also has a certain amount of stretch, providing a more comfortable fit; that said it’s worth noting that I normally sit midway between L/XL with my jacket sizing and in the case of the Jolner I’d definitely go for XL to allow for more comfortable layering beneath it.
There’s excellent rucksack-friendly ventilation via two large, front facing zippered vents with mesh backing; these also double as huge pockets, although you do get one good-sized zippered chest pocket as well.
Additional features include a fully-adjustable, helmet-compatible hood, an integrated Recco system and internal lift pass holder and a high, soft chin guard on the asymmetric front zip.
The only thing I wasn’t keen on was the elasticated cuff adjusters, which are a tad fiddly, but other than that the Klättermusen Jolner is a really well-built, understated and functional ski jacket which should especially appeal to freeriders and the backcountry crowd.
VERDICT: Scandinavian style and functionality at a reasonable price.
