Ski Season in Australia Comes to an End

The strangest of seasons Down Under finishes. Most will prefer to forget it, with the bans on international visitors & lockdowns due to Covid-19. A few lucky ones were able to make some final turns with thoughts now on 2022.

Perisher is amoung the final resorts in Australia to close and it shut down its lifts on Monday 4th October.

“The good the bad and the ugly – this season was anything but normal. To our staff, guests and local community – thank you for supporting us through this wild ride,” Perisher said in a statement.

The resorts Chief Operating Offer, Pete Brulisauer, expanded.

“I’m sure this season didn’t go as per many of our plans, it certainly didn’t go as I planned,” said Pete Brulisauer.

“However, as we come to a slightly earlier end, I’m grateful that we were able to get here safely while still making the most of our mountains, albeit with a few twists and turns on the way.

“Thank you to all our guests who joined us this season, and also those who remained at home to help keep us safe.

“Your patience and understanding is truly appreciated as our teams navigated their way through things they’ve never experienced.

“Thank you to our local communities for pulling through a tough season together.

“And thank you to our incredible staff who we couldn’t have got this far without.

“With the 2021 season now behind us, we’re looking forward to getting back to what we all love and our mountains in 2022.”

The neighbouring resort of Thredbo in the state of New South Wales closed last week.

It has been a season of disruption due to Covid-19, but there has been some skiing and snowboarding in between the closures and lockdowns.

“As we reflect on the season that has just been we have to say it was a strange one,” said Falls Creek in Victoria in a statement.

“For those who could travel – in between lockdowns – there was a special feeling as we got to enjoy the mountain we love. We were devastated for those who could not join us.

“We cant wait to see everyone in winter 2022!”

Next month Australia will lift its bans on international travel.

The country had planned to keep its borders closed into 2022.

The tourism minister, Dan Tehan, then said that they could reopen by Christmas.

Now it is November.

Fully vaccinated Australian citizens and permanent residents will need to quarantine at home for seven days upon entry, but travel can finally happen.

Foreign tourists will not immediately be able to visit, but the government said it was working toward allowing them to come in.

International tourists won’t be welcomed back to Australia until 2022, said the Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

“We will get to international visitors as well, I believe next year,” he said.

Fingers crossed that international skiers and snowboarders will be able to ski in Australia again next season.
