Bavaria Cancels Xmas Markets

Ski resorts in the German alpine state were preparing to open in the next few weeks and are watching developments closely as Covid-19 spreads. The government says by the end of this winter everyone in Germany will either be ‘vaccinated, recovered or dead’.NEW

With Xmas markets closing some fear further restrictions are on the way.

The most famous ski area in Bavaria is Garmisch-Partenkirchen with skiing on the slopes of the Zugspitze mountain.

There are dozens of smaller resorts that mainly cater for locals.

The state has also introduced a lockdown on all areas that have a case rate of more than 1,000 per 100,000 people over a 7-day period.

In those places, bars, clubs and restaurants, plus cultural and sport venues will be closed.

“The situation is very, very serious and difficult,” said state Premier Markus Söder.

“We have a clear goal: fighting corona, protecting people and protecting the health care system.”

About 90% of Covid-19 patients in hospitals in Bavaria are unvaccinated.

Premier Soder has called for mandatory vaccinations to be introduced in the New Year.

The Germany health minister, Jens Spahn, issued a blunt warning on the importance of getting vaccinated.

“By the end of this winter everyone in Germany will either be vaccinated, recovered or dead,” he said.

The same message could apply to all countries.

The neighbouring country of Austria went into full lockdown on Monday 22nd November.

The Zugspitze mountain is in Bavaria with skiing with some skiing over the border in Austria.

It opened for skiing and snowboarding on Friday November 19th but is now closed.
