Trainee Mountain Guide Dies in France

The 29-year old man was caught by an avalanche above the town of Ceillac while climbing in the southern French Alps. It is the first fatality caused by an avalanche this season. NEW
The accident happened last Friday, with details now coming to light as the investigation continues.
At 11.30 the man and his companion were climbing a couloir when they were hit by an avalanche.
The trainee guide was carried 650 feet down the couloir.
The other person, a German national, survived.
The rescue team was hindered by unfavorable weather.
The surviving climber was found hanging from the rockface and was rescued.
The body of the victim, who was reportedly not roped to his companion, was discovered around 1:30 pm.
The deceased man was originally from Val des Prés.
A rescue dog found the body of the deceased.
There had been little fresh snow in the area with the danger judged at Level 1 on a scale of 5.
The investigation is continuing.
