There have been huge amounts of snow across the Rockies in the USA this winter. California, Utah and Colorado have seen records broken and now some are extending their winter season. More are expected to follow suit. UPDATED
The lifts will remain turning at Park City in Utah until 23rd April after a bumper season for snow.
It is the latest ski area to announced that skiing and snowboarding will continue beyond the resort’s scheduled closing date.
Aspen has already announced it is extending its season.
“Why stop skiing when the conditions are this good!” said a statement from Aspen.
“We just hit 300 inches of snowfall on two of our mountains and are celebrating by adding bonus weeks at Aspen Highlands and Aspen Mountain. Our new season closing dates are April16th at Highlands and April 23rd on Ajax.”
Park City is the latest one out of the blocks and is home to two world class ski resorts, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain.
Their respective closing dates have been extended to 16th April and 23rd April.
Park City and the other ski resorts of Utah, opened in November and by January 11th Park City had surpassed its annual average for snow.
Since then a series of snowstorms have hit the Wasatch Mountains, leaving base depths around the 3m mark.
Resorts in California are expected to extend their season too, but currently they are a bit busy dealing with the latest storm.
We reported on the situation at the beginning of this week.
Now another storm is coming through with Heavenly and Northstar both announcing they are closing down to see out the latest heavy snow.
Mammoth Mountain has announced some restrictions describing it as a “mega-storm”.
Resorts hope they will make up for it with extended seasons.
“We have had a very snowy winter in Park City and there is still a lot of time to travel to Winter’s Favorite Town,” said the International Marketing Manager of Park City, Megan Collins.
“April offers lower season rates and less crowded slopes, so with the extension of Park City Mountain’s skiing/riding season through Sunday, April 23 and Deer Valley Resort being open through Sunday, April 16, there is still time to enjoy a winter holiday.”
British skiers seeking a late trip to take advantage of these record breaking conditions, can do so with ease.
Delta Airlines flies non-stop from London Heathrow to Salt Lake City, and from there its just a short ride to the snow.
Here at PlanetSKI we will be keeping an eye on the resorts that extended closing dates, so do check back for the latest.
Perhaps this season is the time to try a Spring break in the USA?
