Mikaela Shiffrin – The GREATEST Alpine Ski Racer of All Time

The 27-year old US skier has beaten the record of 86 World Cup victories that has been held by the Swedish legend, Ingemar Stenmark. Today she won the slalom in Are Sweden to secure her place is sporting history. PlanetSKI looks at her remarkable career. UPDATED

We have been waiting for a while and now Mikaela Shiffrin has a record breaking 87 World Cup wins after taking first place in the slalom in Are Sweden.

Shiffrin has won 35.3% of races she has contested.

She has won 53 slalom races, 20 GS, five super-G, three downhill, one Alpine combined and five parallel World Cup wins.

In 2019 Shiffrin became the first skier to win the World Cup season titles in the slalom, giant slalom and super-G, as well as taking the overall Crystal Globe.

Are in Sweden is where a 17-year-old Shiffrin first won a World Cup race, in the slalom in December 2012.

She equaled the record of 86 victories on Friday as she won the giant slalom.

Last January she broke the number of wins held by a female skier as she overtook her fellow American Lynsey Vonn’s tally:

It was only a matter of time before she would surpass the total of wins by Ingermar Stenmark.

It has now come.

Stenmark was not in Are, but watched the race on television.

He gave Shiffrin an enthusiastic endorsement in a recent interview with The Associated Press.

“She’s much better than I was. You cannot compare,” said Stenmark.

Mikaela Shiffrin was born in Vail in Colorado on March 13th 1995, and is a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

She is a five-time Overall World Cup champion, a four-time world champion in slalom and a seven-time winner of the World Cup discipline title in that event.

She is the youngest slalom champion in Olympic alpine skiing history, at 18 years and 345 days.

PlanetSKI first heard about Mikalea Shiffrin when she was a 16-year old racer trying to make her name back in 2012.

At the time she was the youngest US skier to have stood on a World Cup Podium for 30 years.
