Shiffrin Claims Rare Downhill Win

The US superstar claimed victory in St Moritz, Switzerland, to extend her record as the greatest Alpine skier of all time. She now has 91 victories with just four in Downhill. NEW

The 28-year old has 91 World Cup wins – five more than Ingemar Stenmark’s tally, which had stood since 1989 before Shiffrin broke the record last season.

This was only Shiffrin’s fourth downhill win, with the majority of her victories in slalom and giant slalom.

In the first downhill race of the season, Shiffrin beat two-time Olympic downhill champion Sofia Goggia by 0.15 seconds.

Fellow Italian Federica Brignone, the 2020 overall World Cup winner, was third.

Shiffrin is top of the overall World Cup standings and bidding for a record sixth title.

“There are so many athletes who can win and I never expect to be in front of somebody,” she said.

“Every time I race I know I have to really earn that if I want to be on the podium and winning, and today is no different.”
