Scotland Snow Report

We have heard much recently about the conditions in the Alps and the Pyrenees, but what about closer to home in Scotland? Our reporting team of Rod and Dianne Frazer update us.

“It’s been an odd start to the Scottish ski season,” said Rod.

“Huge amounts of snow accompanied by very high winds and fluctuating temperatures has meant that some hills are heavily loaded, whilst other parts of the same hill are scoured.

“As a result it’s been a slow start on the whole.

Glenshee has a reasonable amount of skiing on offer for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers – last week has been particularly nice conditions due to a ridge of high pressure, bathing the hill in sunshine.

“In Cairngorm the funicular is still out of action, so there are beginner slopes open lower down on man-made snow.

“If you’re prepared to hike 15 minutes up the hill, there’s some excellent snow cover higher up, with the M1 and Ciste tows offering access to some great expert and advanced skiing higher up the mountain.

“The White lady has superb groomed snow.

The Lecht at the moment is open for beginners only.

“Over on the west, Nevis Range is not yet open for snowsports, despite some great accumulations of snow in the Goose, which bodes well for the rest of the season.

Glencoe still needs just a little more snow to open the rest of the hill, but their beginner area is in great shape.

“It’s been an alpine week weather-wise in Scotland, with very cold temps but very little fresh precipitation, but if the forecasters are to be believed, we’re in for some decent accumulations of snow next week, and continued cold temperatures, which would give that all of the ski areas a big boost.

“Fingers crossed it could be a different picture this time next week.”
