The PlanetSKI Snow Report

It’s mild in the Alps and is set to get much warmer. There is snow, rain & some avalanche danger. UPDATED

Tuesday, April 2nd

We are currently in St Anton in the Tirol.

There was some fresh overnight snow as we caught the main Galzig lift first thing in the morning.

We headed over to the Stuben area.

At the top of the gondola the snow depths looked more than positive after a good season so far.

There were some powder turns to be made off the chairlift.

What a day!

We will have a full and updated snow report shortly as we look ahead to the closing weeks of the season across the Alps.

Plus a look at the resort of St Anton as we update our report on PlanetSKI’s month-long stay in Innsbruck.

In the meantime it’s been snowing elsewhere.

PlanetSKI reader, Heather Jefferies, has sent us these images from Courchevel 1350 in Les3Vallees in France:

Do check back…

Monday, April 1st.

The south west and central Alps are seeing the most of the current snow and rain.

There has been heavy snow at altitude and rain lower down.

It has left a ‘high’ danger of avalanche in places.

Here is the current avalanche situation in Switzerland on Monday 1st April.

Three people died in an accident in Zermatt on Monday.

PlanetSKI’s James Cove has been in Ischgl today in Austria where winter is most certainly back.

At the start of the day only about 10% of the ski area was open due to the fresh snow and high winds.

By lunchtime the resort was able to open just over half of its the terrain.

We hit the off piste.

On Easter Sunday the German singer, Nina Chuba, had been due to perform in Ischgl but the weather had other ideas and the concert was postponed to today, Easter Monday.

She managed to squeeze in her performance, before more snow fell later in the afternoon.

The final concert in Ischgl is on the 30th April when the Black Eyed Peas are on stage.

PlanetSKI has been in Ischgl for many of its concerts over the years, and we were in resort as this winter kicked off with Demi Levato doing the honours back in November ’23:

In the meantime Ischgl remains an excellent place to ski in April.

Over the Easter weekend there has also been high winds elsewhere with some resorts closing lifts.

We have reported on it:

Some, including us at PlanetSKI, took to skinning up to make some turns.

We are currently living in Innsbruck and Austria has been affected by rising temperatures in recent days.

“Mild weather has led to a rapid loss of snow at lower altitudes in Austria in recent days.

“You can still find a number of pistes open at altitude in the likes of Zell am See (0/125cm) and Söll (0/55cm) but conditions are very spring-like,” said weathertoski.co.uk.

“For better snow conditions you need to be in a resort with plenty of skiing above 2200m, such as Obergurgl (95/195cm) or Ischgl (20/160cm).”

Once again we can only agree with weathertoski.co.uk.
