Snowsports Equipment Sales on the Rise in the UK

Sales of ski and snowboard gear in the UK are bouncing back, according to the annual trade survey of the Snowsports Industries of Great Britain. NEW

The figures for the 2023-24 season are based on data from suppliers of equipment to UK retailers and rental businesses.

The SIGB says they reveal promising trends for the hardware market and highlight a steady recovery towards levels seen before the Covid-19 pandemic in most product categories.

Key Points:

  • Sales of skis increased by 15%
  • Sales of ski boots saw a 10% year-on-year growth
  • Snowboard sales experienced a slight decline of 2%
  • Snowboard boots saw a robust 12% increase (though fluctuating participation by brands makes all scores approximate)
  • Female-specific ski boots outperformed expectations with a 14% rise
  • Female-specific ski sales decreased by 4%
  • Unisex ski sales experienced a significant 24% growth (this may be the result of brands changing the categorisation of skis from women’s to unisex)

He is in the Alps and will be reporting back shortly on their performance.

Figures for the previous year – the first unrestricted season post-lockdown – showed record-breaking growth in all categories.

The SIGB says the latest results for 2023-24 build on a substantial recovery from pandemic-related disruptions.

It says this year’s more moderate but steady gains signal a path toward a full rebound for the industry.

“The results are encouraging, showing positive growth in the UK snowsports equipment industry, proving that our focus on high quality service means that the UK outperforms other markets and sectors,” the Co-President of the SIGB, Steve Wells, said.

The insights into the industry are taken from the 23rd annual SIGB Trade Survey.

It represents an estimated 90-95% of the UK ski hardware market and 65-75% of the snowboard market.
