I’m in Niseko, making a return visit after a terrific trip last season.
Like most of Europe Japan’s most international resort is having a great season, and has so far recorded more than 10 metres of snow at village level.
Yes, you have read that correctly – 10m!
For someone more used to skiing in Europe the quantity of snow around the resort, piled up at the side of the road and on the roofs is truly astonishing.
On the hill the skiing is, as usual, quite sublime.
There’s been plenty of fresh tracks off the peak and some awesome tree skiing through the forests of silver birch trees.
Things can get quite tight in the forests, so aim for the gaps and don’t look at the trees!

The break in weather was a brief respite and we’ve been back to snow all day, with the next big storm due through within a day or two.

It’s a long way to travel from the UK and the strong Yen doesn’t help with the cost of trip, but I’d say it’s worth doing at least once (and probably more!).
Rob was also in Japan at this time last year and sent us a report at the time.
He works for one of our partners at PlanetSKI, The Inside Out Skiing Club, that teaches indoors in the UK at Hemel Hempstead and then takes a few selected trips to the mountains. Including Japan.
