Marmot Basin in Canada Opens New Terrain

It is the epitome of high alpine riding – steep, snow-filled, treeless terrain with breathtaking views of the surrounding Rocky Mountain Peaks. Who are we to disagree? Check out the images from one of our favourite resorts in Canada.

It’s the first new ski area in the resort in Alberta for 56 years and opened earlier this month.

“The  long-coveted and jaw-dropping slopes to the skiers right of Marmot Peak” are open says the resort.

And this is what it looks like with images from the resort’s Facebook page:

Marmot Basin sits in deep in the Canadian Rockies in Alberta near the town of Jasper.

Many reach it via the Icefields Parkway, one of the world’s classic ski drives.

PlanetSKI first visited in 2015 when our editor, James Cove, was on one of his legendary North America road trips.

Check out this report on the journey and our take on the resort:

James was so impressed he returned the following season with his family.

If travel conditions allow in the season of 2021/22 PlanetSKI is planning to live in Canada for a couple of months and Marmot Basin will be on our list of resorts to visit – we look forward to tackling the new ski area too.

If you are lucky enough to be in Canada and can visit the resort then Marmot Basin is hoping to remain open until May 2nd.

“There is still plenty of time to head to Jasper and check out the new terrain. Please feel free to share this great news with your skiing and snowboarding friends,” said  the vice president of Marmot Basin, Brian Rode.

“There was a tremendous amount of planning and work that went into getting this exciting advanced and expert terrain open. Hats off to our safety and operations team for making this dream a reality,” he added.
