New Ski Train Set To Run Next Winter

A Eurostar Ski Train will run every week this winter from London to Moutiers and Bourg St Maurice in France. In an unusual twist Compagnie Des Alps, a major ski lift company for French resorts, has charted the train from Eurostar and tickets will only be for people heading on a package to its resorts.    UPDATED

There will be an overnight non-stop service departing on Fridays from London – St Pancras and a daytime return service departing on Saturday morning from France.

“The ‘Ski in France’ experience will begin in the heart of London,” said Travel Ski Express as it released news of the service.

It will give access to Meribel and Les Menuires in Les3Vallees as well as La Plagne, Les Arcs, Val d’Isere and Tignes.

It will operate  under the name ‘Travelski Express’ and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Compagnie des Alpes, CDA.

CDA will sell it as what it describes as “a dynamic package deal that combines transportation, shuttle service, lodging, and ski passes.”

“I hope that CDA will make it easy for the many excellent tour operators in the UK to sell tickets, as well as for skiers to book independent travel too,” said Daniel Elkan from the specialist ski rail web site, Snowcarbon, to PlanetSKI.

“I don’t have any details like when tickets go on sale, prices, timetable or how to get hold of tickets.  But I’ll be following up to help get you all the information you need,” added Daniel.

Some are concerned that the tickets are limited to people taking a CDA holiday package.

PlanetSKI readers have reacted positively to the news.

“Excellent news,” said Stuart Horsley, with Fran Mercer joining in commenting “This is the first good news.

“Shame it’s package deals only,” added Darren Valentine.

“Travelski Express also attests to our interest in serving our foreign clients. Distributed exclusively via the Travelski website, this unique  offer reinforces Travelski’s international bid to win new clients heading for France.”

CDA is trying to operate in a more environmentally responsible manner and is aiming for Zero Net Carbon emissions by 2030.

It also wants a positive impact on biodiversity and zero non-recycled waste by the same date.

“In the face of an unprecedented health crisis that led to the total closure of our activities for the entire winter season last year, Compagnie des Alpes is working closely with its partners to promote a swift and robust recovery of the mountain economy,”  said David Ponson, Director, Mountain/Ski Area Operations and Outdoor Activities for CDA.

“The Compagnie is taking concrete steps that include the continuity of its investment commitments and innovative, zero carbon projects. Investing in the mountain and beyond, investing for the mountain – these are the keywords of our lasting, trust-based relationship with our delegates-partners.”
