Tignes is First Resort to Open in France

Skiing and snowboarding have started in Tignes. In Italy Cervinia has also begun its winter season this weekend with more resorts opening in Austria. 14 resorts in the Alps have some glacier slopes open with skiing starting in the USA too. UPDATED

Tignes is the first resort in France to open its slopes as some lifts on the Grande Motte glacier started turning on Saturday 16th October.

The lifts in Cervinia in Italy also started spinning on Saturday.

The Molltal glacier opened in Austria on Thursday 14th October.

Next weekend on  23rd October Les2Alpes in the Isere region opens for the half-term holidays until November 7th.

Also on the 16th the resort of Stubai in the Tirol in Austria opened up its park for freestylers.

Some slopes were opened last weekend.

Many high altitude areas in the Alps saw some snow last week and it has been continuing this week in places.

It has been snowing again in the Alps, this time mostly in the east, with 10-30cm falling in the last 24 hours in the northern and eastern Swiss Alps, and parts of Austria,” said the alpine weather expert Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk.

In Austria Hintertux, Stubai, Soelden, Kaunertal, Pitztal, Molltal and Kitzsteinhorn are open.

The Swiss resorts of Zermatt, Saas-Fee and Engelberg also have slopes open on their glaciers.

In Italy Val Senales, Passo Stelvio and Cervinia are currently open.

In Scandinavia Ruka and Levi in Finland have some slopes and cross-country trails open.

Snow has been falling in many resorts in the Alps as the weather turns colder.

Val Thorens opens for its long winter season on October 22nd and PlanetSKI will be in the resorts for the opening.

We are keeping a close eye on the snow and it’s looking pretty good.

Over in St Anton in the Tirol winter has arrived.

In the USA a couple of resorts in Colorado opened last weekend – Wolf Creek on Saturday and Arapahoe Basin on Sunday.

Other resorts in the state have their snow guns on.

Resorts in Canada have also seen the first signs of winter this month.

In Silverton in Colorado the ski patrol has been making a few tracks.
