PlanetSKI Hits Canada For a Bucket List Ski Trip

PlanetSKI’s Claire McAteer is hitting resorts in Alberta and British Columbia. The snow is not as good as it could be, but no matter. Canada is a dream come true. UPDATED

Friday 27th January

The fresh snow has finally arrived at Sunshine Village.

Just over 10cm with more coming down this morning.

Tuesday 24th January

I’m hard at work doing research on the latest leg of my Canada bucket list ski trip.

How comfortable the deck chairs are is important after all.

Oh, and we’ve had a bit of snow.

Sadly just a dusting.

Sunday 22nd January:

Many people are saying it’s the longest time without snow in this part of Canada for this time of year.

However, for me it’s still amazing skiing because of the scenery and the pistes are mostly holding up.

Lake Louise and Revelstoke are fine, but in Sunshine Village it’s got down to the surface in places with people bringing out their ‘rock skis’.

I’m told it is not so good in Kicking Horse either.

No matter, Canada is stunningly beautiful plus there are bits & pieces to be found.

Overall it is very different to the Alps with much more adventure and I’m loving the difference.

And what I love here is that there’s not a silver Moncler jacket or a rosé fuelled Rupert to be seen
– just proper outdoor enthusiasts in good gear focused on skiing.

But no skiable off piste sadly.

It’s finally started snowing in British Columbia, so we are hoping to see some fresh powder in Revelstoke.

We have had pretty much zero queues, so in my mind Canada is still well worth it.

The busiest queue we have seen was the first gondola up on  Saturday morning in Revelstoke.

And did I mention the food?

Do check back as I update this rolling blog before posting my main article on my bucket list ski trip to Canada…

Thursday 19th January

I must say it had some concerns about the snow as I sunk into my seat on the Air Canada flight.

I left Verbier in Switzerland last week just as the big snow storm in the Alps was about to start.

Sadly there were no reports of big powder dumps in Canada.

I’m doing the dream Canadian  trip of skiing in the resorts around Banff in Alberta from my first base in nearby Canmore:

  • Sunshine Village
  • Lake Louise

Then I’m heading into neighbouring British Columbia to sample the delights of Kicking Horse and Revelstoke.

More of that later as I update this rolling blog.

First up its Sunshine Village:

Regular readers will know Sunshine Village is a favourite of PlanetSKI editor, James Cove, and you can find out more about Sunshine Village in one of his earlier reports:

Next for me it’s Lake Louise where the snow had improved.

And here are those fabulous Canadian views I’m talking about.

Feast your eyes on this:

I’ll be updating this report as the trip progresses and telling you more about my impressions of Canada and why you might perhaps want to add it to your bucket list.

There is nowhere quite like Canada.

I just wish there was a bit more snow, but there is some in the forecast..

Do check back…
