Great Austrian Resorts for Spring Skiing

They’re ski areas with a long season, kicking off early and finishing in April or even May. Check out some great choices for your spring trip to the mountains.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again.

At PlanetSKI we are great fans of skiing in the spring.

Mostly it’s for the long, often sunny, days.

Get out on the slopes early to make the most of it before the snow cuts up and turns to slush.

How about getting up before dawn, ready for a fresh tracks experience?

In Zillertal selected lifts open at 6.55 AM every Thursday and Sunday in March while St. Johann in Tirol allows skiing from 6:59 AM on weekends.

In SkiWelt, you can hop on the lift from 7:30 AM every Thursday.

Ötztal’s Gurgl offers a weekly “First Line” experience including early morning skiing and breakfast at a hut.

In Bad Kleinkirchheim early risers can explore the slopes with ski race legend Franz Klammer on selected dates throughout the month.

Spring skiing is also about keeping going until enjoying a late lunch.

Maybe a Tiroler Gröstl, the bacon, onion and potato fry-up that’s one of the most popular dishes in Austrian mountain huts.

Then it’s time to head home for a chilled drink on the terrace.

Or you could take in one of the concerts that are staged to mark the end of the season.

The British musician, George Ezra, is headlining Ischgl’s Top of the Mountain Spring Concert on 30th March.

The stage is at 2,300 metres.

Sölden’s Electric Mountain Festival has five days of music above 2,000 metres from 10th to 14th April.

And there’s always some fun to be had.

In Zillertal, it’s Lederhosen Wedel Week from 10th to 16th April.

If you hit the slopes wearing traditional lederhosen or dirndl dresses and buy a 3-day lift pass, you’ll get your 4th day of skiing free.

As well as long, sunny days, it’s not that unusual to get a big dump of fresh snow in the spring, which is always a bonus.
