We’re here for a spot of summer glacier skiing. Plus a whole load more – e-biking, walking, visiting underground glacier lakes, mountain karting, hiking the Hahnenkamm & a city break in Innsbruck. Read on to see what awaits us in the Tirol… UPDATED
It’s always a pleasure flying into Innsbruck airport – winter or summer.
The mountain tops in the distance still have some snow on them, with the odd patch here and there too.
The ski resorts are now shut with winter a distant memory.
The final glacier ski resorts closed last month, but one remains open – Hintertux.
It is open year-round and, along with Zermatt in Switzerland, is one of only two ski areas in the Alps open all year if conditions allow.
It may be summer in the valley, but at 3,000m the snow still remains.
We’re staying in the village of Lanersbach, just down the Zillertal Valley from Tux.
The Jager hotel to be precise, where we can see the ski slopes of Hintertux in the distance from our balcony.
We’ll be heading up to its slopes later in the week so do check back to see what skiing is like at this time of year.
We’ve skied in Hintertux before out of the main winter ski season.
Up on the glacier in Hintertux we’re also visiting an underground glacier lake that is 30m underneath the slopes.
It’s something we have never done before – boating and maybe even some standup paddle-boarding inside a glacier.
It was discovered by chance in 2007.
No summer trip to the Alps is complete without some hiking.
The routes in this part of the Tirol are some of the best.
Next on the itinerary after Hintertux is the town of St Johann where we’re going e-biking and mountain karting.
PlanetSKI was last in St Johann a couple of winters ago.
It will be good to see it again, this time in the summer.
After that PlanetSKI is heading to Kitzbuehel, where we’ll be doing some more hiking.
This time on the Hahnenkamm – the location for the most famous Downhill race of them all.
And we’ll be exploring Kitzbuehel – one of the most picturesque mountain towns of them all.
Finally, it’s a couple of days in Innsbruck for a city break.
Most know what the capital of the Tirol offers in the winter months – both in the city and its surrounding ski resorts.
But what about in the summer?
Do check back and we’ll let you know.
There’s more on offer than you may think.
Much more…
