Clear Weather Across Much of the Alps

It’s bright in the West but cloudy in places in the East with some light snowfall. PlanetSKI reports from the Alps. NEW

The weather has stabilised after some recent changeable conditions with snow, rain, sun and wind.

The temperatures have also returned to something more like normal after some wild fluctuations.

The freezing level is now at about 1,500m in the north-western Alps, with colder temperatures further east.

“High pressure is dominant across the Alps, meaning plenty more sunshine today, at least at altitude, but also some areas of cloud or fog plaguing some of the lower valleys,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk on Friday.

“The weather will stay mostly fine over the weekend too, except for in the far south-west (e.g. Isola 2000, Sestriere) where some snow is likely to fall, possibly also extending over the French border into the likes of Montgenèvre, Val Cenis, Val d’Isère and Tignes,” added Fraser.

Here’s the scene in Wengen with an image from PlanetSKI reader, Laura Polglase, of the blue sky and deserted slopes.

“This is what happens when everyone else has gone to watch the World Cup Super G,” said Laura.

The recent snow brought several avalanche fatalities, but the snow pack has now generally stabilised.

Caution is urged off piste with some wind blown snow and fluctuating temperatures.

At the high altitude resorts conditions remain good for mid-January.
