Last modified on February 13th, 2025
The work of ski patrollers across the world has been marked, as it shone a spotlight on the extraordinary professionals who keep the mountains safe and resorts open. UPDATED
Ski patrollers are the first responders of the mountains.
They combine medical training with avalanche control expertise, and an in-depth knowledge of mountain safety.
From marking hazards and conducting rescue operations to providing first aid and ensuring pistes are in top condition.
Their work is vital in making ski resorts a safer place for everyone.
Whether battling extreme weather, responding to injuries, or preventing avalanches, they work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure skiers and snowboarders can enjoy the slopes with confidence.
In Verbier, one of the most renowned off-piste destinations in the world, ski patrollers are highly trained in avalanche control and mountain rescue.
With over 410km of runs and skiers venturing into freeride terrain, their expertise is crucial in keeping the area safe.
Kali, a Ski Patroller in Verbier’s top tip is to download the app “White Risk” on your phone, to get daily updates to help plan your day.
You can also ask the local ski patrol for information about the avalanche danger.
A couple of years ago PlanetSKI spend a full day with the Verbier ski patrol, see here for a full and detailed article on the work of the ski patrollers:

The Norwegian brand Helly Hansen supports the day, that takes place each year of February 8th.
“We’re honoured to be the brand trusted by professionals, and we’re grateful for all that they do to keep people safe while enjoying the outdoors,” says Oliver Flaser, Category Managing Director for Professional Services at Helly Hansen.
“We’re proud to support International Ski Patrol Day again this year and, after seeing the outpouring of appreciation from skiers and snowboarders all over the world last year, we’re excited to keep the celebration and gratitude going alongside our local resort partners and their communities.”
Across the Atlantic in Jackson Hole in the USA, the Tetons demand expert avalanche mitigation and rescue techniques.
Jackson’s 86 ski patrollers are among the best in the world.
Each day 39 people work, performing controlled explosions to manage snowpack stability and ensuring the resort’s extreme terrain remains safe for thrill-seekers.
The Jackson Hole Ski Patrol even has its own Instagram page.
