Spring conditions continue in the The Alps with some light snow in places. We look ahead to March & April skiing. UPDATED
Updated, Tuesday 11th March.
It is generally cloudy in the Alps with some fresh snow in places.
There has ben some sunshine in the western Alps.
“Resorts that have seen some useful snow include Sestriere, Cervinia, Monte Rosa, Zermatt, Saas-Fee and even Val d’Isère,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk.
“However, for most of the Alps there was just a dusting at altitude at best.”
The ski touring season is getting underway and PlanetSKI’s, Tashie Cove, is currently based in Chamonix with the Ski Club of Great Britain on a ski touring trip.
“The on piste conditions are decent high up but the immediate off piste is a bit cruddy,” said on a day visit to Courmayeur in Italy.

“There was a few centimeters of fresh snow today that was really enjoyable, high up there was some decent powder to be found, but lower down it was choppy and slushy.”

In the Pyrenees heavy snow has been falling at altitude, with rain at lower altitudes.
Here’s Soldeu in Andorra on Sunday:

There’s also been some snow in Sierra Nevada in Spain.

Over in the USA there has been further heavy snow in Utah, but it has come at a cost with another avalanche death.
A 51-year-old back-country skier died over the weekend, taking the avalanche death toll in the state to five this season.
“Any avalanche accident is truly a tragedy,” said Craig Gordon from the Utah Avalanche Center.
“This one particularly hits home because this gentleman was part of our greater snow community.”
In Colorado the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) said eight people have been caught in avalanches since Thursday.
Back in the Alps conditions remain generally good at altitude at many places in the Alps, but there is much less snow lower down.
As March continues all eyes will be on the temperatures and where the spring snow may fall.
In recent years some of the best snow conditions have been at the end of the winter, March/April and even into early May.
Many resorts are now placing greater emphasis on the end of the season:
- New spring event for La Plagne
- Ski Club GB heads to Tignes for end of season
- Verbier focuses on spring skiing

This year the main Easter school holidays run from Friday 4th April, to Monday 21st April.
Easter is already 85% sold-out for the Saturday 5th April departure date, according to UK specialist SNO Ski Holidays.
“There are some terrific Easter ski deals departing on Saturday but beds and flights are quickly becoming scarce,” said CEO of SNO, Richard Sinclair.
“But there are still a quarter of all beds and flights still available if you’re willing to travel on the Sunday 6th for a week.
“If you can’t find exactly what you want departing Saturday, you’ve got a higher chance if you switch to a Sunday to Sunday trip,” said Sinclair.
The early booking of Easter ski holidays has been attributed to skier confidence in the late season snow quality.
