The PlanetSKI Snow Report
24th March 2025
Last modified on April 3rd, 2025
There are spring conditions across much of the Alps and it’s time to head high for your end-of-season turns. The recent wintry conditions that brought significant snowfall to Austria have now been replaced by spring sunshine. PlanetSKI is there. UPDATED
Thursday 3rd April
Looking good in the Austrian Alps today.
Here’s PlanetSKI’s Jane Peel who is in Mayrhofen in Austria.
There’s plenty to do apart from skiing and snowboarding.
The parapenters are flying above Innsbruck too.

Wednesday 2nd April
The wintry weather in Austria has passed and there are now some fabulous late-season conditions.
“The sun is back, the views are back, spring is back in Mayrhofen,” said PlanetSKI chief reporter, Jane Peel.
“It’s been a joy to be able to see for miles again.
“All the snow we had from Saturday night through to Tuesday has given some great conditions on the runs.
“It will definitely be soft snow this afternoon, though, as it’s very mild.
“Perfect for a spot of sunbathing.
“I got chatting to a bar worker on a chairlift and he said these last few days with all the snow and then the sunshine have been the best of the season here.”

It is a similar picture elsewhere in Austria with excellent conditions at the high-altitude glacier resort of Stubai, near Innsbruck.
PlanetSKI reader has sent as a couple of images from Kuhtai.
Also near Innsbruck.

It all rather mirrors what happened in Austria at the beginning of the season when there were huge snowfalls in September.
Once again it shows that the weather in the Alps does not always follow the perceived norms.
Tuesday 1st April
Heavy snow is continuing to fall in Austria.
PlanetSKI’s Jane Peel is in Mayrhofen in Austria.
“There was yet more snow overnight and it’s still snowing on and off this morning,” said Jane.
“It’s a bit colder than yesterday so the snow is drier and lighter. Not bad at all for 1st April.
“The forecast from Wednesday until the end of the week is for much clearer weather with some sunshine and blue skies.
“But it will get warmer so it will be a return to Spring.”

Monday 31st March
We should probably call today Magic Monday in Mayrhofen.
It just keeps getting better for PlanetSKI’s Jane Peel, who is in the Austrian resort.
“Fresh snow is great. Visibility is overrated,” she said, after taking the wrong turn on at least a couple of occasions.
It was worth it.
Here’s her latest video snow report (note the error – it’s Monday, not Sunday!):
And here are some images of the mountain today.

PlanetSKI is in Mayrhofen in Austria for The BRITS, the British Snowboard & Freeski Championships this coming week.
“Pretty good on the slopes above Mayrhofen in Austria today after some snowfall overnight,” said PlanetSKI’s Jane Peel this morning.
The snow was visible on the trees as Jane made her way up on the Penkenbahn…..

Saturday 29th March
The weather is changing in the Alps with new weather fronts set to arrive on Sunday.
In Austria light snow is forecast, while in France blue skies are predicted after cloudy conditions.
“Snow conditions in the Alps remain highly variable, as you would expect at this time of year,” said out alpine weather expert, Fraser Wilkin, from weathertoski.co.uk.
“They will improve significantly for some areas over the next couple of days, especially in the northern and north-eastern Alps where most of the new snow will fall.
“However, once it stops snowing, any improvements to conditions at this time of year can be very temporary as the strong spring sun gets to work.
“There is also very little snow at low altitudes, as there has been all season, so it is still important to aim high.”
PlanetSKI’s editor, James Cove, is in Val d’Arly the French Alps.

While PlanetSKI’s chief reporter Jane Peel has arrived in Mayrhofen in Austria for The Brits.
“Pouring with rain all the way from Munich airport and still chucking it down at resort level,” said Jane as she arrived.
“Hopefully it’s snow up higher and I’ll be reporting back on Sunday.”

Friday 28th March
Today’s video report comes from PlanetSKI editor, James Cove, who is on a poma lift in the French ski area of Val d’Arly.
We will be posting a full report on Val d’Arly over the weekend.
James was particularly taken by the ski area of Notre Dame de Bellecombe with its super red runs mentioned in the video.
Once again he has hit on one of those lesser-known ski areas that has so much more to offer than people are generally led to believe.
If you have been following the recent ski travels of James you will know he was in Les Sybelles earlier this week.
Another such ski area.
Check out this 360 degree view from the highest point in the area above the resort of Saint Sorlin d’Arves:
Late season skiing adventures really are some of the best.
We will be updating this report shortly with full details of the snow conditions across the Alps.
Plus the all-important forecast as we approach April and into the final few weeks of the ski season of 2024/25.
Do check back…

Tuesday 25th March
There is a lot of cloud across the Alps today, with a few well-scattered showers and sunny interludes.
“Snow conditions are typically spring-like across the Alps and you generally need to head to higher altitudes to find the most consistently good snow,” said Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk.
“In the short term, though, the far south-western Alps are standing out for some notable late-season skiing following significant falls earlier in the week in the likes of Prato Nevoso, Limone and Isola 2000.
“The next significant snowfall will be this weekend across the northern Alps (e.g Avoriaz, Engelberg, Lech).”
PlanetSKI editor James Cove was travelling from the UK to Geneva today before heading off to spend a few days in the half dozen resorts that make up the Sybelles area in the Maurienne Valley in France.
It was a balmy 13c at midday at Geneva airport with clouds and just a few snow patches on the Jura mountains.

Now you would have thought as he headed up the mountains in the Alps it would get colder.
Er, no.
It was 21c mid-afternoon at 1,600m in the ski village of Saint Sorlin d’Arves where he is staying.
There was snow on the marked runs, but grass off them.

But at least there was snow at his accommodation, so ski-in-ski out remains possible.

Time for a spot of lunch in the spring sunshine.

And then ski hire pick up from Intersport.
“One of the great thing about the premium package from Intersport is you can change your skis at will,” said James.
“I am having some piste skis for the inevitable morning ice and then maybe I’ll swap them once it gets slushy and something fatter is required.
“We’ll see.”

Do check back on Wednesday as James discovers an area in the French Alps he has never visited.
Plus reports on conditions in the area and beyond.
Monday 24th March
A warm foehn wind from the south has pushed temperatures up after a few scattered snow showers over the weekend.
PlanetSKI’s Simon Miller has just arrived in Arosa in Switzerland.
At the top of the resort the conditions are decent for the time of year, with people enjoying the blue sky and clear weather.

There is clear weather across much of Switzerland.
PlanetSKI reader, Ian Anderson, is travelling on the Bernina Express.
This is the scene at around 2000m near Pontresin.

Across the Alps the picture remains similar with slushy snow at low altitude but some decent skiing higher up on hard packed pistes.
We will be updating this article shortly on the forecast conditions for this week, so do check back.
