Whistler Ends Summer Skiing

The Canadian resort has announced it is suspending summer skiing on its Horstman Glacier in the Blackcomb area indefinitely. It ends a decades-long tradition. Climate change is to blame.

The resort says shrinking snow coverage and deteriorating surface conditions are the main reasons behind the closure.

Summer operations on the glacier have been under increasing pressure in recent years due to a pattern of warmer winters and shorter snow seasons that have steadily eroded the viability of maintaining camps through the summer months.

Michelle Morton reports for CBC News:

We have reported on past summer closures on PlanetSKI:

As well as recreational skiers and snowboarders the glacier area also saw professional skiers, race teams and elite athletes.

Some are expected to head to locations like Timberline Lodge in Oregon or the southern hemisphere.

There are some ski areas in Europe, that are open across the summer.
