2nd July 2025
A landslide hits an evacuated Austrian village in the Tirol. There have been flash floods elsewhere and a fatality in Italy. NEW
Around 100 people were evacuated by helicopter from the village of Gschnitz in the Tirol.
People in mountains huts were also flown out of the area.
Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain caused a mudslide that hit parts of Gschnitz.
No-one is reported injured but there has been substantial damage to some property.
Three local mountain huts – Bremerhütte, Innsbruckerhütte, Tribulaunhütte – are not accessible via hiking trails due to the landslides.
The authorities are praising the work of the rescue services as they deal with the incident.
It follows a huge landslide at the end of May that buried the village of Blatten in Switzerland.

In the ski resort of Bardonecchia in northern Italy a 70-year-old man drowned after being caught in flash flooding.
He was swept away after stepping out of his vehicle.
Bardonecchia hosted the snowboarding events at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.
“We are increasingly faced with emergency situations due to weather events that we used to call rare but are now more and more frequent,” said Piedmont’s President, Alberto Cirio.
“A water bomb hit the town of Bardonecchia, causing damage and unfortunately a victim,” he added.
In France there has been heavy rain in the Savoie region with more than a month’s worth of rain falling in a few hours.
15 people have been placed in emergency accommodation, with vehicles reported to have been swept away by mudslides and rain.
The alpine regions in France remain on Orange Alert and there has been disruption to road and rail travel.
The Alps has been impacted by the current heatwave across Europe as we have reported elsewhere on PlanetSKI.
