Meribel Threatens to Withdraw from 2030 Winter Olympics

The French resort is currently set to be a host venue, holding both the women’s alpine skiing + all Paralympic ski events. UPDATED

Last year, the International Olympic Committee and French organisers unveiled a plan that placed men’s alpine skiing in Courchevel and women’s alpine skiing in Meribel.

The neighbouring resorts successfully co-hosted the 2023 Alpine World Ski Championships that was seen as a trial-run for the Olympics.

However, the organising committee has now put forward an option that the women’s Olympic alpine events could move to Val d’Isere.

Meribel has accused the organising committee of undermining established Olympic principles, highlighting that separating the events would be a “real aberration—logistical, financial, environmental and symbolic.”

The local mayor, Thierry Monin, condemned the proposal, saying “If Meribel doesn’t have both events, which doesn’t adhere to the Olympic Charter, we will withdraw our candidacy.”

Val d’Isere was initially scheduled to host the slalom events for the 2030 Olympic Games.

It later disappeared from the venue proposal to the International Olympic Committee.

The French Alps Organising Committee told Dauphiné Libéré that they are “taking note of the decision by the town hall of Les Allues to end the dialogue aimed at confirming Meribel in the programme of the Olympic and Paralympic Games French Alps 2030.”

“To date, no definitive arbitration has been made.

“The COJOP and all its stakeholders are working on a preferred plan to offer the best possible programme in terms of sport and spectacle, all within a responsible budgetary and environmental framework.

“This work continues with an unwavering ambition for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
