Snow at Altitude & Cooler Temperatures in the Alps

It has been a hot summer in the Alps, but the weather is turning more autumnal as September starts and the seasons are set to change. NEW

There has been some snow falling in the Alps and more is set to follow in the next few days before warmer and sunnier conditions return at the weekend.

Here are some web camera images from La Plagne in France at 3,000m:

We will bring you more images of the snow at altitude in the Alps later, so do check back.

It will of course make no difference for the approaching winter and little difference to the current  autumn skiing, but it is a sign that the seasons are changing.

“While any fresh snow on the glaciers at this time of year is welcome, it can’t disguise the fact that the Alps have endured yet another torrid summer, with increasingly poor conditions in the few alpine resorts which still offer summer skiing,” said the alpine weather expert, Fraser Wilkin, from weathertoski.co.uk.

“The glacier at Hintertux,  traditionally one of the most reliable for snow in the Alps and usually open 365 days a year,  was forced to suspend operations in early August and is set to reopen at an unconfirmed date in September.”

Currently there are three glacier ski areas open in the Alps:

  • The Passo Stelvio glacier in Italy is set to close on November 2nd. 2025.
  • Saas-Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland are set to remain open throughout autumn. Access  from the Italian side to the glacier area which Zermatt shares with Cervinia is only open until 7 September.

Here at PlanetSKI we have been following the conditions over the summer:

We will also be keeping a close eye on the autumn conditions, so do check back.
