There is some skiing and snowboarding on offer at a handful of resorts in the Alps:
There are currently four ski areas open in the Alps:
- Zermatt, Switzerland
- Saas-Fee, Switzerland
- Passo Stelvio, Italy
- Val Senales, Italy
Some others are hoping to open some runs later in September.
They include Sulden in Italy.
Pitztal has announced an opening date of September 27th:
And lets not forget Norway.
Here’s Myrkdalen on Monday morning.
The forecast for this week in the Alps indicates some snow at altitude – possibly as much as 50cm in some places.
The temperatures are set to fall and, it will be cold enough over the higher Alps to see some heavy snowfall.
Some forecasts predict there could be around half a metre of fresh snow in some southern Switzerland and western Austria areas.
At lower altitudes in the Alps there is forecast to be heavy rain.

Potential snowfall for week beginning 21st September.
We shall see.
“So far this September the weather in the Alps has seen notable hot spells interspersed with brief cooler periods with a few showers,” said the alpine weather expert, Fraser Wilkin, from weathertoski.co.uk.
“This time around, the more autumnal weather looks set to stay for a while, with relatively cool temperatures and showers on the cards for most of the Alps this coming week.
“This is good news for the glaciers, most of which will see welcome top-ups of snow over the next few days, with Hintertux and Pitztal expected to open for skiing on Saturday.”
The first resorts in the USA to open a decent amount of terrain are often Arapahoe Basin and Loveland in Colorado.
They have a been battling it out in friendly rivalry to be the first to open for decades.
