Stubai, Soelden and Kaunertal have opened for the season. Nine ski areas are now open in the Alps as winter gets closer. UPDATED
Stubai near Innsbruck in Austria fired up some lifts on Friday 3rd of October.
It marks the start of one of the longest ski seasons in an Austrian resort as skiing & snowboarding usually continues into May.
Soelden, that delayed its opening a week ago, is now offering some skiing and snowboarding up on its glacier area.
As is Kaunertal.
Moltaller and Kitzteinhorn in Austria are due to open this weekend.
Nine glacier ski areas are now open in the Alps:
- Austria: Pitztal, Hintertux, Stubai, Soelden and Kaunertal.
- Italy: Passo Stelvio & Val Senalis.
- Switzerland: Zermatt & Saas-Fee.
Some skiing has also started in Finland as Ruka and Levi open using snow stored from last winter.
There are further falls of snow this weekend.
“The heaviest precipitation will fall in the northern Swiss and Austrian Alps (e.g. Engelberg, Lech, Kaprun) with the rain/snow limit starting above 3000m early this afternoon but falling rapidly to as low as 1500m in the northern Alps tonight,” said the alpine weather expert, Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk, on Saturday.
“It will remain showery on Sunday with the heaviest precipitation again in the northern and north-eastern Alps where the rain/snow limit will be around 1400-1600m.
“Over the next 36 hours or so between 15cm and 25cm of new snow can be expected to fall on the Austrian glaciers, including Sölden, Stubai and Hintertux, with closer to 10cm falling on the Italian glaciers of Passo Stelvio and Val Senales, and a maximum of 5-10cm in Zermatt and Saas-Fee.”
Next week the temperatures are set to rise.

Now we should not get too exited about the snow as for many resorts their opening is still over two months away.
But it is a sign that the seasons are changing and we can start looking forward to winter.
Lets not forget North America where snow has been falling.
Here is Sunshine Village in Canada:
While, Copper Mountain in the USA has already turned on it s snow guns.
Here at PlanetSKI we will be updating on the autumn snow and resorts opening so do check back.
Winter is coming folks!
