First Snow Falls in North America

It is coming down in parts of Canada and the USA. The snow guns are on in a handful of US resorts as they race to be first to open. UPDATE

The temperatures have fallen in Colorado and the snow guns have been fired up as the annual battle to be first to open gets underway.

Arapahoe Basin and Loveland are once again going head to head.

“We typically try to kick it into high gear around mid-October,”said a statement from A-Basin.

“Our snowmaking team has been out all night, monitoring conditions and jumping on the opportune weather windows, and will continue to work hard to help us be among the first to open in the country.”

Keystone has also fired up its snow guns.

“Keystone will be blazing the trail, opening as early as possible in October with the help of Mother Nature and the resort’s state-of-the-art, energy-efficient snowmaking system,” the resort said.

“The rest of Vail Resorts’ larger resorts in North America and Switzerland plan to open in the weeks that follow.”

Here are some proposed opening dates in Colorado:

  • Breckenridge: Friday, November 7th.
  • Vail: Friday, November 14th.
  • Beaver Creek: Wednesday, November 26th.
  • Crested Butte: Wednesday, November 26th.

Elsewhere in the USA snow has been falling in Jackson Hole in Wyoming.

This year Jackson Hole is celebrating 60 years since it opened:

Resorts in Idaho have also seen some snow.

“It’s always exciting to see the mountain covered in snow again,” said Brundage Mountain Resort General Manager, Ken Rider.

“These inches probably won’t stick around long, but it’s a great reminder that ski season is just around the corner.

“The energy starts to build the moment we see that first coat of white.”

Brundage Mountain Resort’s target opening day is Friday, November 28th – weather and snow conditions allowing.

And lets not forget Mammoth Mountain in California that is seeing some of the largest current falls in North America.

In Canada snow has been falling in Sunshine Village near Banff in Alberta.

The resorts around Banff have named the proposed dates for their opening:

  • Mt. Norquay:  November 1st, 2025
  • Banff Sunshine: November 7th, 2025
  • Lake Louise Ski Resort: November 7th, 2025

It’s also looking promising in Castle Mountain in Alberta.

Here at PlanetSKI we will be keeping an eye on the snow falling and which resort will be the first to open in the USA.
