Another storm is hitting parts of the north west Alps and once it passes there could be up to 1m in places. UPDATED
In the north west Alps many areas have already seen well over half a metre of snow fall.
The ski resorts of Tignes and Val Thorens have seen some of the best of it.
Tignes has probably seen the most snow any resort in the Alps in this current storm cycle with well over 1m at altitude since Thursday.
On Monday afternoon the freezing level was around 1,600m as the snow continued.

A new storm hit the north-western Alps on Monday.
“This storm will deliver further significant snowfalls to the north-western Alps both today and tonight before the weather settles down again on Tuesday,” said the alpine weather expert, Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski.co.uk.
“The rain/snow limit this morning is around 1100m but will rise to between 1500m and 1800m later today, before falling a little again tonight.
“Storm totals for Monday/Monday night are likely to be around 15-30cm above 1800m across a wide swathe of the north-western Alps (e.g. Avoriaz, Verbier, Mürren, Engelberg, St Anton).
“The north-eastern Alps (e.g. Schladming, Obertauern) will see slightly less snow – typically 10-15cm above 1800m.
“The southern Alps will be a bit more ‘hit and miss’, with some significant snow in places close to the main Alpine ridge (e.g. Cervinia) but much less snow further south, where the snowline will also be higher (e.g. Dolomites).”
5-day snowfall totals for this storm will exceed 1m above 2,600m in some parts of the north-western Alps.
When the current storm passes on Tuesday the temperatures are forecast to rise sharply.

In Austria there is the first snow of the autumn on many mountains passes
“It will snow on many mountain passes for the first time this autumn,” said the meteorologist, Simon Hölzl, from GeoSphere Austria.
“Snow or slush is to be expected on passes such as the Timmelsjoch, Kühtaisattel, Hahntennjoch, Arlberg and Gerlos passes, and possibly also in the Felbertauern portal area.”
There are several glacier ski areas in the Alps already open and the change in the weather is welcome.
Glacier ski areas currently open in the Alps:
- Austria: Pitztal, Hintertux, Stubai, Soelden, Kaunertal, Kitzsteinhorn & Molltal.

In Norway, skiing continues on the Galdhøpiggen glacier.
Another sign that winter is on its way is that this weekend saw the first World Cup alpine ski race of the season – giant slalom races for the men and women on the glacier area at Soelden in Austria.
GB’s 18-year of Freddy Carrick-Smith made his debut on the World Cup stage on Sunday 26th.
